EL PASO, Texas - Marshall women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches with a 1-1 draw at UTEP on Sunday at University Field.

The Herd's 12-match unbeaten streak (9-0-3) is tied with No. 1 North Carolina for the longest active stretch in Division I women's soccer. UNC moved to 11-0-1 on the year with a 2-0 shutout of Boston College on Friday.

The Herd earned its eighth point in the Conference USA standings with the draw. At 9-1-3, 2-0-2 in C-USA, Marshall is off to its best start in league play since 2009 when it earned nine points over the first four matches (3-1-0).

The Miners went to 8-4-2, 1-1-2 in the league. The draw snapped a three-match losing streak for Marshall when playing in El Paso (0-3-1). The all-time series now stands at 5-2-2 in UTEP's favor.

In the 14th minute, an unlucky cross to the UTEP keeper from a Miner defender resulted in an own goal, giving the Herd an early 1-0 advantage. Marshall held on to the lead heading into halftime.

UTEP found the equalizer in Bri Thomas' first goal of the season at the 67th minute. She one-timed a cross from Angela Cutaia, putting it away with her left foot. Neither team could find a go-ahead goal in the remaining regulation time, so the game went into overtime. It was Marshall's second consecutive overtime match, and its fourth in the last six outings.

The Herd held UTEP without a shot in the first period of extra time, but could not find the net itself. The second and final overtime period ended without a deciding factor, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

In terms of statistics, the Herd out-shot the Miners 22-14. Marshall's Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) took a game-high six shots, with two on-target. Each team took five corner kicks. UTEP goalkeeper Alyssa Palacios made eight saves while Marshall keeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) had two.

OVERTIME? NO PROBLEM

The Herd is unbeaten (4-0-9) in extra time since the start of the 2013 season. Marshall's last overtime loss was Oct. 25, 2012, when it dropped a 1-0 decision in the 94th minute to ECU in the season finale.

LONG STORY SHORT

Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:

On the drawn result:

"I thought it was a good game; it went back and forth. Both teams had a couple chances to break the tie. UTEP gave us a lot of trouble in the midfield. They have a lot of talented athletes out there. Coming away with four points this weekend, on one of our toughest road trips geographically, we'll keep our heads high and look forward to Friday's game [at UAB]."
