GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team erased a two-run deficit late Friday, coming from behind to beat former Conference USA foe East Carolina 5-4 in a nine innings game Thursday.
AGAINST THE PIRATES
The win improved Marshall to 6-0 on the season. Sophomore pitcher Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) earned her sixth win in the circle for the Herd this season. Additionally, Dixon threw for 16 strikeouts, moving past her old single-game record of 14 set last season.
Dixon moved past Katie Murphree for seventh all-time in Herd career strikeouts with 303.
East Carolina started with the lead and lead for much of the contest, after Casey Alcorn brought two runs home in the bottom of the first. Marshall finally responded in the fifth when senior Kristina Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.) pinch-hit and drove freshman Kylie Howard (Glen Easton, W.Va.)
In the top of the seventh the Herd was down 3-1 and needed to stay alive, Marshall was able to drive in two runs. A triple by freshman Elicia D'Orazio (Clermont, Fla.) drove in sophomore Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.). Then junior Shaelynn Braxton (Woodridge, Va.) brought in D'Orazio to tie the game and send the contest to extra-innings.
In the top of the ninth, Zerkle singled up the middle, bringing sophomore Rebecca Myslenski (Seabrook, Texas) home. Then, a passed ball by the ECU catcher brought home Zerkle for the go-ahead run. ECU made the score 5-4 in the bottom of the inning, but the Herd held on to the victory.
