Box Score

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team (12-3) got off to a strong start to open the Carolina Classic in Columbia, with a 9-1 win over Tennessee State (3-5) on Friday.

AGAINST THE BUCCANEERS

Junior Katalin Lucas got a run first for Marshall. After being hit by a pitch and stealing second, Lucas was brought home on a two-out RBI double from senior Kristina Braxton, which bounced and hit the wall in left center to make it 1-0 Herd.

In the third, Kaelynn Greene was able to single and later score on a passed ball. After freshman Elicia D'Orazio got on base thanks to a walk, she advanced home from third after Lucas was involved in a run-down between first and second. That ended the inning to make it 3-0 Marshall.

For Marshall in the fourth, Braxton singled to left field, but a fielding error by the left fielder brought home pinch-runner Jordan Colliflower. Freshman Kylie Howard then sent a deep shot to center field, giving the Glen Easton, W.Va. native her first collegiate home run. Kristina Braxton scored on the home run as well. Sophomore Morgan Zerkle then later scored on a single by D'Orazio.

In the fifth, Kristina Braxton continued her strong afternoon with a single that scored Lucas. Howard then hit another single, which allowed Braxton to score on a throwing error and end the game with the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth at 9-1.

Marshall sophomore pitcher Jordan Dixon got the win and moves to 11-3 this season. She threw six strikeouts and only allowed two hits. Dixon's six strikeouts helped to move her to sixth all-time in Herd history, surpassing Abigail Harter (361). Dixon is currently at 365 career strikeouts, just behind Natasha Johnson at 366 for fifth all-time.

Zerkle is now tied for seventh all-time in Herd history for stolen bases (70), level with Carrie Hinkle. Greene is in sixth place, with 72.
