HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall Herd softball team (15-6, 2-1) will open 2015 play at Dot Hicks Field on Friday and Saturday in a three game series against Western Kentucky (8-4).
HAVE YOU HERD?
The original time of Friday's game has been moved up from 2 p.m. to 11 a.m. As of Thursday afternoon, the game times for Saturday remain at noon and 2 p.m.
INDIVIDUALS AND TEAM AT TOPS OF NCAA STATISTICS
The Herd finds itself at or near the top of NCAA statistics in a few important categories.
For team statistics, Marshall is first stolen bases per game, with 3.30. Sophomore center fielder Morgan Zerkle also leads the nation with 1.26 stolen bases per game.
Marshall's pitching staff ranks at the top of the national statistics as well. Sophomore pitcher Jordan Dixon is tied for the national lead in victories with 14, while Dixon also leads the nation with 144 strikeouts.
BRAXTON NOW SIXTH IN CAREER HOME RUNS
Junior infielder Shaelynn Braxton's homer at FIU last Saturday moved her sixth place in Herd history with 24 career homers. She moved past Alyssia Hively (23, from 2009-13).
Braxton needs just nine more home runs to pass No. 2 all time, Samantha Rodriguez. Marshall's career leader in home runs is Rachel Folden, with 58.
SCOUTING THE LADY TOPPERS
Western Kentucky's season can be defined by the games that haven't been played. Even though the team has an 8-4 record, a total of 14 games have been cancelled for the Hilltoppers. That includes a span of 11 straight games from Feb. 20-March 1.
In its most recent game, the Hilltoppers lost 2-1 to South Carolina.
Amy Tudor is in her second season coaching her alma mater. Tudor is 41-28-1 at WKU.
