CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Marshall softball team split the day against Conference USA opponent Charlotte Saturday, dropping the first game 4-0 and winning the second 7-2 at D.L. Phillips Stadium.
Marshall moves to 18-9 and 4-4 in C-USA, while Charlotte is now 13-12 and 2-3 in conference.
Charlotte pitcher Lexi Betancourt threw 11 strikeouts and allowed just five Herd hits as Charlotte defeated Marshall 4-0.
The 49ers used power hitting to help win the game, as Jessica Plemmons and Jackie Kleinsmith both hit home runs on the day.
The players with hits for Marshall included sophomore Morgan Zerkle, junior Kaelynn Greene, freshman Elicia D'Orazio, senior Emileigh Cooper and junior Katalin Lucas.
Marshall was able to score the first three runs of the second game, starting in the first inning. Braxton hit a sacrifice fly to deep right that scored Zerkle. The next batter, junior Raquel Escareno, would get in on the action next at-bat with an RBI double to score D'Orazio and make the score 2-0.
Marshall added a run in the fourth, when freshman Madi Marshall scored on a wild pitch. The 49ers would score a run in the inning as Haley Pace would score from a home run.
The Herd got key plate appearances from Braxton and Escareno in the fifth. Braxton would smack a two RBI double to right that brought around Zerkle and D'Orazio again. Escareno followed with her second double of the ball game to score Braxton and Cooper and make the score 7-1 Herd.
The 49ers would rally to make the game 7-5, but Marshall was able to hold onto the victory, 7-5. Pitcher Jordan Dixon won the game and moves to 17-9 this year.
