GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Marshall softball earned two wins Saturday against the Furman Paladins (15-15) in Greenville to improve to 20-10 in 2015.
The two wins give Thundering Herd head coach Shonda Stanton 500 for her coaching career. Stanton has 473 wins at Marshall, but coached at IUPUI for one season before Marshall, earning 27 wins with the Jaguars.
Marshall would score a run to start the first inning. Sophomore Morgan Zerkle led off with a single, then advanced to third after a hit by freshman Elicia D'Orazio and a walk from junior Shaelynn Braxton. Junior Raquel Escareno then hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right center that Zerkle scored on easily and made the score 1-0 Herd.
Escareno would bat in the second Herd run of the day in the third. Zerkle walked, stole second and then advanced to third. Escareno then ripped a single through the left field gap to score the sophomore again and make the score 2-0. Â
Marshall's third run came from the bat of freshman Madi Marshall. The St. Alban's, W.Va. native hit a single in her second career at-bat (her first was in the fourth inning), which scored Kristina Braxton. The hit was Marshall's first in her career and her first RBI.
Marshall pitcher Jordan Dixon got the win, pitching seven shutout innings, while allowing only one hit. The sophomore struck out 11 batters as well.
Escareno finished 2-2 with two RBI. Zerkle was 2-3 with two runs and two stolen bases.
Marshall scored first again, this time in the second inning. Junior Alyssa Woodrum singled up the middle and scored Cooper.
In the third, Marshall moved two runs across. First, Shaelynn Braxton singled to right field to score Zerkle easily to third. Braxton would then move from second to home after an Escareno double to left center to make the score 3-0 Marshall. From there, the Herd would hold on to the lead and win.
Dixon earned the win again to move to 19-10. She did not allow a hit for the first 5.2 innings. She also pitched another eight strikeouts.
