IRVING, Texas -- Marshall volleyball alumna Sammie Bane (Brownstown, Ind.) is one of 14 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Friday.
This is the seventh year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually awards the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
Bane was a four-year captain as the setter for the Thundering Herd volleyball team, finishing her career ranked fourth on the school's all-time list with more than 4,000 assists. She was a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and garnered three Academic Medals.
"It's a great honor for Sammie to be recognized by Conference USA for all her achievements and academic excellence," Herd coach Mitch Jacobs said. "It shows what an athlete can accomplish when they hold themselves to the highest possible standards."
Bane, who hails from Brownstown, Ind., graduated with an impressive 3.96 GPA as a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Science in exercise science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She also served as president of Marshall's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and received the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award. Bane has been accepted into the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at Indiana University.
