HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall Athletics will hold a memorial service for the late Phil Ratliff on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Marshall University Memorial Fountain. The Ratliff family will be in attendance and the public is invited to attend.

Ratliff, 44, died Sunday in a Hickory, N.C., medical facility following a “cardiac event.”

Ratliff, a two-time All-American and MU Hall of Fame offensive lineman for the Thundering Herd from 1989-92, was the program’s tight ends coach from 2006-11 before joining the Charlotte 49ers as the offensive line coach/recruiting coordinator for the 2012 season.

He joined Marshall’s coaching staff after spending two seasons (2004-05) at James Madison, helping the Dukes to the 2004 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship.

As an assistant coach at Marshall, he helped the Herd to victories in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in 2009 and Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in 2011.

Following his playing days, Ratliff was a student assistant at Marshall (1993), defensive coordinator at Lawrence County (Ky.) High School (1994-99) and head coach at Spring Valley High School (2000-03).
