HUNTINGTON, W.VA. -- Marshall volleyball opened its 2015 season with a 3-0 win for the green team in the Herd's annual Green and White Scrimmage on Sunday (Aug. 23) evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd's green team, which consisted of Ashley Arnold (Myrtle Beach, S.C), Justice Craft (Kentwood, Mich.), Allie Kellerman (Louisville, Ky.), Lauren Legge (Pliny, W.Va.), Lauren Mattmuller (Venice, Fla.), Taylor Pelton (Louisville, Ky.), Jessica Sayre (Charleston, W.Va.) and Kayla Simmons (Gainesville, Fla.), earned the first set victory with a final score of 25-21. The team then went on to win the second and third sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-19, respectively.
Tonight's scrimmage was the first chance for the Herd's fans to get a glimpse of the 2015 team. New to the squad are four freshman: Kassidy Lemons (Prichard, W.Va.), Lauren Mattmuller (Venice, Fla.), Shelby Conley (Paintsville, Ky.) and Zoe Schreiber (Hagerstown, Md.).
"It's always good for the younger players to get some nerves out," Herd coach Mitch Jacobs began. "I thought our experienced players did some really good things. The green team as a whole played harder throughout and it definitely showed on the defensive side of the ball," Jacobs continued. "The focus points we've had throughout preseason were mostly done well and I like the focus playing through the whistle," Jacobs finished.
Marshall opens the regular season this Friday (Aug. 28) at the Eagle Challenge hosted by Morehead State. The Herd will face Indiana State at 1 p.m. and Morehead State at 7 p.m. The team will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, August 29 against the Canisius Golden Griffins at Noon.
