HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall had its best offensive performance in nine years with a 5-1 defeat of Eastern Kentucky on Monday evening at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The Herd gained its fifth consecutive victory and moved to 5-1-0, extending its longest win streak since it opened 2009 with a program-record seven straight wins. Marshall has not fallen since a 1-0 season-opening loss at Monmouth on Aug. 21. The Herd's five goals were the most since a 10-0 obliteration of Delaware State on Sept. 25, 2006.
HIGHLY OFFENSIVE
For the second consecutive week, Marshall garnered a Conference USA weekly honor as senior forward Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) was named Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Simmons totaled eight points (3 G, 2 A) to pace the Thundering Herd to a pair of weekend wins. The senior opened the week with a goal in a 3-2 win over Ohio on Sept. 4. On Monday, Simmons exploded for two goals and two assists as Marshall dominated Eastern Kentucky, 5-1. The Gahanna, Ohio, native is fourth in the league in total points (11) and is currently riding a three-match scoring streak.
Simmons' honor marks the first time Marshall has earned back-to-back weekly awards, and the first time the Herd has had two in the same season. Sydney Arnold (Stafford, Va.) earned the same title last week for her performances against IUPUI (Aug. 28) and Indiana State (Aug. 30).
ON A ROLL
The Herd's five-match win streak is the longest active stretch in Conference USA, and the longest for Marshall since 2009. Additionally, the Herd is witnessing some individual streaks.
- Matches with a point: forward Sydney Arnold (four), forward Jayne Lawman (three)
- Matches with a goal: forward Erin Simmons (three), Sydney Arnold (two)
- Matches with an assist: Jayne Lawman (two), forward Ashley Seltzer (two)
- Consecutive starts: defender Jenna Dubs (64), midfielder Kelly Culicerto (50), goalkeeper Lizzie Kish (45), Sydney Arnold (33), midfielder Kayla Byrnside (25)
MAY WE HELP YOU?
The Herd has a league-high 14 assists on 13 goals through six matches. To put this in perspective, Marshall had 17 assists on 25 total goals last season. Senior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) and sophomore Katie Suchodolski (Langhorne, Pa.) lead the Herd with three assists apiece, ranking fourth in Conference USA.
HERD RUNS DEEP
Marshall has shown significant depth on its side as nine members of the Herd have contributed at least one point so far this season. Among the pack are career firsts by rookies Ashley Seltzer (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jayne Lawman (Winfield, W.Va.); sophomore Katie Suchodolski (Langhorne, Pa.) and junior Jordan Parkhurst (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
East Tennessee State (4-2-0) is looking to rebound from its second loss in three matches, a 6-1 defeat by Navy on Sunday. The Bucs have produced 11 goals so far this season, led by Sarah Zadrazil and Molly Collinson with three apiece. Goalkeeper Jasmine Elliot has two shutouts on the year with a 1.64 goals-against average.
Friday will be the Herd's first meeting with ETSU.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Merlin Beckwith leads Appalachian State (3-2-0) with a pair of goals and assists. Last time out, the Mountaineers were shut out, 1-0, by George Mason at the Patriot Invitational (Sept. 6). Before Appalachian State hosts the Herd on Sunday, it will take on High Point on Friday at 5 p.m.
The Herd holds a 2-0-0 lead in the series with the Mountaineers, with both meetings in Huntington. Last season, the Herd took a 2-1 result at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex (Sept. 7, 2014). Prior to that, Marshall won the first meeting, 2-0, in 2010.
UP NEXT
Marshall will complete its non-conference schedule against James Madison at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. For all the latest information about Marshall women's soccer, follow @HerdWSoccer on Twitter.
