@Herd_Tennis Opens Fall Season At Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Marshall tennis begins its 2015 fall season this weekend when the team travels to the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary. The invite will take place from Sept. 18-20.
The Herd starts the tournament with a match against the host school William & Mary at 9:30 a.m. and then Conference USA foe Old Dominion at 3 p.m. on Friday. Marshall will then retake the court on Saturday for three matches against, Dartmouth at 9:30 a.m., Penn at 11 a.m. and either South Carolina or VCU at 3 p.m. MU wraps up the tourney on Sunday with its second match against the Tribe at 9 a.m.
The Invitational will have a team style of play for the second straight year with each team competing in three singles and three doubles matches over the three days. Doubles matches will take place on Friday and Saturday, meaning each team will compete in two doubles matches on one of the two days. One singles match will be played for each team on every day of the event.
THE 2015 HERD
The Herd enters the invitational with four upperclassmen from last year's squad- juniors Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway), Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio), Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany).
Marshall also returns sophomores Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.).
MU welcomes freshman Jackie Carr (Rogers, Ark.) and junior Karina Aryngazy (Astana, Kazakhstan) to the team. Carr, a five-star recruit, won numerous titles throughout her high school career, including the UTSA National Open in both singles and doubles in 2014. The freshman has been ranked as high as 15th in the nation by the UTSA.
FLASHBACK TO 2014
Marshall wrapped up the 2014 season with a 16-10 with a national ranking No. 52. The Herd defeated UTSA and nationally ranked Old Dominion in the Conference USA tournament before falling to Rice in the final. Marshall was 10-1 at home, including four victories over nationally ranked opponents: Louisville, Minnesota, DePaul and William & Mary.
Then sophomores Turhan and Pomyatinskaya were selected to the All Conference USA First-Team in singles and Second-Team in doubles. The pair ended the spring season with a 12-12 record at the No. 1 spot, including five wins against ranked teams.
After starting the spring season ranked No. 116 in the country, Turhan went 10-12 overall in singles play. Her career highlight was a win against then-No. 9 Silvia Garcia of Univ. of Georgia 7-6(4), 6-0. She has tallied 22 career single wins at Marshall.
Pomyatinskaya carried a team-best 19-6 singles record in the spring, her season highlight being a win against then-No. 107 Elena Kordolaimi of Houston. This season she posted a team-best six match winning streak, and in her two years has tallied 35 singles wins.
Silver was selected to the Second-Team Singles, while Morales was named to the Third-Team singles. Silver saw most of her time in the two spot with and posted an overall record of 16-9. Morales finished the season with an 18-5 record.
