HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team returns to action as it welcomes the Liberty Flames to Hoops Family Field. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
HAVE YOU HERD
Marshall is 5-6 this season and is looking to get back on the winning track after dropping its previous two matches at Evansville (2-1) and at South Carolina (2-1). Senior Daniel Jodah leads the team with three goals, seven points and 17 shots with 10 on goal. Freshman Paul Whitener leads the Herd with four assists and has one goal. He is second on the team in points (6), shots (14) and shots on goal (9). Seven different players have scored a goal for Marshall this season.
Freshman Trevor Clemens has spent the bulk of the minutes in the net with 627 minutes. Clemens has a record of 4-3 and a goals against average of 1.00. He has allowed seven goals while making 24 saves. Junior Nate Himes has started three games this season and appeared in four at keeper. Himes is 1-3 this season and has logged 360 minutes in the net.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Liberty is 4-6-1 and has lost its previous three contests. The first two were at home against Dayton (1-0) and UNC Asheville (4-3) and then the most recent a 2-1 loss at Radford. The Flames have been shut out just twice this season and are led by sophomore Tresor Mbuyu with seven goals. Three players have scored three goals apiece with senior Martin Agredo, redshirt sophomore Jovani Chavez and sophomore Kevin Mendoza. The Flames have been adept at making passes count as Liberty has 21 assists for 19 goals scored.
Freshman James Knoebel has been the main player in the net for the Flames with just over 928 minutes. Knoebel is 4-5-1 and has allowed 18 goals while making 50 saves.
THE SERIES
Saturday is the 11th meeting all-time between Marshall & Liberty. The Flames hold a small advantage over the Herd in the matchup. The first time they stepped on the pitch together was Sept. 4, 1996 in Huntington. Liberty took the first two contests in 1996 & '97. The Herd won at home in 2001, the first season for current Liberty head coach Jeff Alder. Over the next seven matches, Marshall and Liberty have traded off between wins and losses with ties in every other matchup. In 2003, a Liberty win followed by a tie in '07, a Liberty win in '08 and then another tie in 2010. Then Marshall took over with a 2-0 win in 2012, a tie in 2014 and then a double-overtime win in 2015.
PROMOTIONS
Saturday is $1 Dog Day at Hoops Family Field. Fans who also have a FEST ticket will get in for free.

UP NEXT
The Herd will head south for its final non-conference match of 2016 with a contest at Wake Forest. Kickoff is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. After the date with the Demon Deacons, Marshall's final five games are all Conference USA matches.
