HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team (6-6, 1-2) captured a non-conference victory against the Liberty Flames (4-7-1, 1-2) Saturday afternoon, 3-2 in overtime. Junior Myles Newhouse scored the game winner in the third minute of overtime.

Liberty dominated play in the first half, testing Marshall freshman goalkeeper Trevor Clemens with six shots on goal. Senior Tommy Trupo took the first shot for the Herd just three minutes into the contest, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. The Flames began to put pressure on Clemens, taking three shots on target in a ten minute span, but the Herd goalkeeper was able to stop all of Liberty's attempts. The Flames finally broke through with a 27th minute goal from Sophomore Tresor Mbuyu his eighth of the season.

Marshall turned the tables in the second half. The Thundering Herd broke through the Liberty defense in the 65th minute, the goal was scored by redshirt-senior Trevor Starcher, his third of the season. The goal was assisted by John Pappas, his first. Just a few minutes later Marshall took the lead when Newhouse scored his first goal of the year, a headed effort off a short cross from senior Daniel Jodah, his second assist this season. Liberty was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute, sophomore Kevin Mendoza stepped up and converted from the spot.

It took just three minutes for Newhouse to collect his second goal of the game and season for the overtime winner. A loose ball, was collected and crossed by junior Jascha Glueckschalt which found the head of Newhouse who finished the play, and the game.

COACH'S CORNER
Quotes from assistant coach Thomas Olivier:

On the team's play in the first half
"We played well in the first 15 minutes of the game and then our momentum died down. Liberty was able to take control of the half. We were disappointed with the goal that we gave up and disappointed with our play in the first half."

On the performance of Myles Newhouse
"Myles had been asking for a chance to play. He had been training well for the last couple of weeks and deserved a chance to play. He made the most of it, so credit to him for his performance. He really did a great job."

On how the team is prepared for a tough stretch
"We're definitely battle tested. We've been on the road and have had some close matches with top-20 teams in the country. We've played a good number of solid teams like Liberty today that are tough to break down and battle hard. We have a tough road ahead of us on Tuesday with a really good Wake Forest team and we have a tough one Saturday here at home with FIU."
