HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall tennis returns to action this weekend, as it travels to Louisville to face the Cardinals Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Herd closes the weekend out Sunday against the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at 10 a.m.
WHERE WE RANK
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released Wednesday, Marshall moved up one spot and is now ranked 55th in the nation. The Herd remains the second highest team in Conference USA, as it trails Rice, who sits at 31st. Old Dominion is ranked 64th.
LAST TIME OUT
The Herd is 3-2 this season after a dominating performance last Friday against Morehead State and Radford. Marshall swept the Eagles in the morning session, 7-0, and followed up with a 6-1 win over the Highlanders in the night cap. Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia), Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany), Anne Gulsrud (Stavanger, Norway) and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) led the way for Marshall, with each having shutout their opponent in at least one set. Maddie Silver (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Rachael Morales (Columbus, Ohio) each posted two wins in singles.
Marshall was perfect in doubles Friday with five wins. The final doubles match resulted unfinished due to the other two doubles matches finishing.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
The Louisville Cardinals are 6-1 this season with its only loss coming against Middle Tennessee last weekend. The match came down to the final point, as the Blue Raiders earned a 4-3 win over Louisville. The Cardinals have wins against WKU, Southern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Xavier, Morehead State and Murray State.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
Miami (Ohio) is 1-3 this season with its lone win coming at Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 29. The RedHawks have dropped matches against #51 Indiana, Cincinnati and Xavier. Miami of Ohio has been led by Emily Struble this season with a 14-5 record, including 3-0 in dual matches.
The Herd and the RedHawks met earlier this season at the Nishan Vartabedian Invitational. Marshall claimed two singles wins and one doubles win in the contest.
