CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Marshall golfers Ylva Forslund (Vreta Kloster, Sweden) and Leigha Holt (Holly Springs, N.C.) were named Women's Collegiate Golf All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), announced Tuesday.
The honor is the first for Forslund, and the second for Holt (2014-15). The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, including a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. A total of 828 women's collegiate golfers were recognized for the 2015-16 season.
"I'm very happy for Leigha and Ylva," Herd coach Tiffany Prats said. "They both have difficult majors and played our entire season, as well. To see them have success in the classroom is great. They are both great representatives of our team and I'm very proud of them."
Forslund was the Thundering Herd's top finisher at the 2016 Conference USA Championship, placing 16th. The freshman shot a low round of 74 on five occasions, at four different tournaments, including the league championship. She led Marshall at three events, with her best finish of 15th coming at the Bluegrass Kickoff (Aug. 31). She shot the team's low score of the season (223) at the Kiawah Island Classic (March 1). The chemical sciences major holds a 3.80 GPA and was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll on April 12.
Holt made her second consecutive appearance on the WGCA All-American Scholar team after qualifying last year. This season, the sophomore earned a career-best finish of fourth place at the Bearcats Spring Classic (March 17) and led the Herd at three different tournaments. She shot a season-low 72 and a career-low 226 at the Golfweek Program Challenge (Sept. 8). Holt, a chemistry major, holds a 3.65 GPA and is a member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The Women's Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the WGCA represents nearly 600 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
