MARSHALL (1-0)
Doc Holliday, head coach
Opening statement:
I think we played the way we should have played. I thought it was pretty clean, I was disappointed in the turnover on the opening drive. Other than that we took care of the ball which was important. In the second half there were a couple things that we have to clean up with the kicking game, a lot of that was some young kids in there who didn't get their jobs done. We have a great challenge next week against Akron, they have some good players and Terry (Bowden) will have them well coached, so we will be ready go.
On the defensive success with the young kids:
They both are freshmen and somebody just told me that (George Davis) broke a school record tonight, 95 yards. We have two young kids who got in there and made some plays and it's going to be important that those guys continue to be great players for us.
On Corey Neely's play:
All three of those safeties played well Kendall (Gant), Corey (Neely) and CJ Reavis all played well. It's great to see great things happen to guys who work hard, and he had a tremendous off-season, tremendous winter, and a tremendous summer and it carried over on to the field.
On Chase Litton tonight:
I thought the outside receivers made some plays and (Deon-Tay) McManus made a tremendous catch, Michael Clark stepped up for the first time and he made some plays as well. Chase had a very clean first half and he picked up where he left off in the second.
On Michael Clark:
He had not played football in five years I think, so that's the first time he has stepped on the field and played the game since high school which is a while back. He has practiced well and he has been going up against a good defense in practice and of course it carried over into the fall so it was good to see.
On what coach Holiday liked from his defense:
They are athletic and they can run. The best thing you can say about them is they kept that team out of the end zone, which is what they should have done. They made plays when they had to. I thought we played a lot of players, that's the first time that (Davon) Durant has played in a while but he went in there and played well. I think at one-point Chuck kept several freshmen back there in the secondary so it's good to get their feet wet.
On the kicking game:
The missed field goal was not Amoreto Curraj's fault; we weren't good enough up front. The missed extra-point is unacceptable and we will get better in that area. Those conditions with the wind in the first half and with the rain in the second half I thought the long snapper went in there and did a nice job. (Kaare) Vedvik averaged 44.5 per punt I think, so for his first time out I think he did a tremendous job.
Chase Litton, sophomore quarterback
On the performance of the offensive lineââ'¬Â¦
"What the offensive line did tonight was spectacular. They put us in positions to succeed and we capitalized on that."
On the performance of Michael Clarkââ'¬Â¦
"He's a special player and we knew that when he was coming in. Tonight, he showed what he can do."
On having a bye week to open the seasonââ'¬Â¦
"We were biting at the bit. The guys were ready to go and anxious to play football. We talked today about how camp seemed to go on for about a month, but we came out today excited and ready to go."
On rebounding after a turnover on the opening driveââ'¬Â¦
"We just let it go. Coach Legg preaches to us to let everything go. If you throw a touchdown, let it go. If you throw a pick-six, let it go. Hyleck made a mistake and corrected it and it never happened again."
Tony Pittman, redshirt junior running back
On his first carry of the gameââ'¬Â¦
"It was a designed outside handoff and the offensive line took out defensive players blitzing. I just read the play at the line of scrimmage and was able to break it for a big gain."
On the versatility of the running backsââ'¬Â¦
"Each of the four backs has the capability to do different things. We have speed, balance and power in our running backs, so we wanted to see what everyone is capable of tonight."
Michael Clark, redshirt sophomore wide receiver
On making his debut tonightââ'¬Â¦
"It was a good way to begin the season. I had family on hand tonight, so it was nice to be able to perform well for them and for the team."
On the defensive touchdownsââ'¬Â¦
"It's very exciting to see the offense, defense and special teams all come together. Scoring the two defensive touchdowns was a boost."
Ryan Bee, redshirt sophomore defensive lineman
On having to wait an extra week to playââ'¬Â¦
"We were all antsy. This has been a long time coming and being a late game, that makes for a long day but we were really excited to come out and play today."
On Morgan State's blockersââ'¬Â¦
"Morgan State has a big offensive line and a big tight end, so that was a challenge to get around both the linemen and the tight end, but it was good to get back after the quarterback."
Chase Hancock, redshirt sophomore linebacker
On making his first start tonightââ'¬Â¦
"It feels good. The coaches have been building me up for this by putting me on special teams and giving me playing time. It shows that they depend on me out on the field."
On the defensive shutout tonightââ'¬Â¦
"It was excellent. As a defensive player, what you strive for it to pitch a shutout and tonight we were able to do that."
On George Davis' fumble recovery for a touchdownââ'¬Â¦
"I was in the end zone to congratulate him. That return was a new school record, so I'm very happy for him."
Corey Neely, senior defensive back
On his forced fumble that led to a touchdownââ'¬Â¦
"As soon as I could see that George (Davis) had the ball and had one defender to beat, I knew that he was gone."
On the defensive performanceââ'¬Â¦
"It's hard to face a team that you know you can beat, knowing that they're going to play hard and give it their all. You never know what could happen, so being able to pitch a shutout felt nice."
On the defensive backsââ'¬Â¦
"I think everybody played their role well tonight. Everybody was locked in and got their job done like our coaches have been telling us to do."ââ'¬â€¹
MORGAN STATE BEARS (0-2)
Fred Farrier, interim head coach
Opening statement:
It's definitely disappointing when you don't score any points and you turn the ball over like we did. I feel like looking back, I have to do a better job of preparing the kids to play. Marshall is a good football team, but they are not a team we should lose 62-0 to. To many turnovers and simple mistakes, which I have to do a better job of making sure the offense, defense, and special teams are ready to play. The way we played today was unacceptable, I take the blame for it and we have to find a way to play better.
On Marshall's early successes:
They made some big plays, and they had players who made some really nice plays. For us, it's not just getting in position to make the play, but we have to get there and make the play when the opportunity is there to stop big plays like they had.
On the team's Preparation:
Every single one of our guys need to look in the mirror and ask themselves if they're preparing themselves the right way, if they're coming to practice with the right attitude, if they're fully focused when it comes to study sessions and practices. We have to bring what we correct on the practice field and in the meeting rooms to the games.
On taking positives from this game:
Our kids need to pull the trigger and trust the coaches and themselves better. There are some things to build on, we have a bye week next and us as coaches will look at the film and build on this to prepare our team better.
