CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Marshall volleyball team fell to Indiana State in five sets Saturday (17-25, 25-23, 25-16, 19-25, 8-15). Marshall (4-3) finished the weekend 2-1 and came in second in the West Virginia Capital Classic to Indiana State (4-2). The Sycamores finished 2-1 for the weekend but took the tie-breaker with the win over Marshall.

Indiana State dominated the first set. The Sycamores jumped out to 5-1 lead and never looked back. The Herd came within one at 9-8 off a kill by Taylor Pelton. Indiana State battled back to build the lead to four, 14-10. Two Sycamore attack errors helped the Herd to a two-point deficit. Indiana State went on the attack and finished off the set.

The second set was a fight back and forth as Marshall took the largest lead through the first half at 17-14. The two teams traded points but the Herd held the lead for the remainder of the set. Marshall was powered by five kills from Madison Hill and four from Jac'cara Walker.

The momentum stayed with the Herd through the third set. Indiana State recorded the first three points but Marshall immediately followed with four straight to take the lead. Kills by Kiekover and Hill drove the Herd. Indiana State tied the set at four, but a kill by Madelyn Cole put Marshall back in the driver's seat. The Thundering Herd steadily kept a lead of five or more through the remainder of the set. Kiekover and Hill contributed four kills apiece.

Marshall began the fourth set in dominating fashion grabbing the first five points and also taking a seven point lead at 12-5. Indiana State went on an 11-3 run to take the lead at 16-15. The Sycamores then ended the set on a 9-4 run to send the match to a fifth set.

Indiana State kept momentum on its side driving through the fifth set on the way to win the match.

Walker and Allie Kellerman were named to the All-Tournament team. Walker led Marshall with 65 kills and Kellerman led with 92 digs over the three match tournament.

West Virginia defeated Morehead State in five sets earlier Saturday to take third place.

COACH'S CORNER
Quotes by head coach Mitch Jacobs

On the matchââ'¬Â¦
"It's obviously disappointing to have a team do what we have done the last two matches be down 2-1 and come back and beat you. But it has to be a lesson to our team because we have to understand that the match isn't over until it's over. And it seems like until we have our backs against the wall, we don't always give everything we have."

On Indiana Stateââ'¬Â¦
"I was very clear in pregame that I thought Indiana State was our toughest matchup in terms of what Indiana State does give us, it really effects our weakest places. They're very disciplined, well coached, they touch a ton of balls on the block. They dig balls everywhere, they make you keep playing and for a while there we were really getting into them. Their game wasn't really working, we were getting them out of their game and we were taking over but then we hit the brakes in the middle of set four. It was as if we said 'we got this'. We have to maintain that execution and that discipline."

On the weekendââ'¬Â¦
"I thought we had some really good performances for the weekend. Different players really stepped up and did some great stuff. We just have to learn from this weekend like we did from this past weekend and move forward."
