@Herd_Tennis Hosts Maryland to Conclude Five-Match Homestand

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall women's tennis team returns to the court to finish its five-match homestand when it takes on the Maryland Terrapins Saturday at noon at the Huntington Tennis Club.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is 8-5 this season following wins over Winthrop and Miami (Ohio), a pair of teams that defeated the Herd in 2016. The Herd is 3-1 during this homestand and re-entered the ITA rankings on Tuesday, checking in at No. 48. The Herd is led by Maddie Silver, who owns a 10-2 singles record at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Stephanie Smith and Derya Turhan are 9-2 and 9-3 in singles play, respectively. The Herd boasts five players with at least seven singles wins this season (Silver, Smith, Turhan, Rachael Morales and Anna Pomyatinskaya). Turhan and Pomyatinskaya represent the top doubles pair for the Herd with a 7-3 record at the No. 1 spot. Morales and Smith went 2-0 last week at the No. 2 spot for the Herd.
Maryland will be the fourth Big Ten Conference opponent to come to Huntington. The Herd is 3-0 against the Big Ten Conference this season with wins over Wisconsin (7-0), Minnesota (7-0) and Penn State (4-0).
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS
Maryland is off to its best start in school history at 8-1. The Terrapins are currently ranked No. 38 in the ITA rankings and have yet to lose a match on the road. Maryland's lone loss came against William and Mary on Mar. 3. Alexandra Stanova leads Maryland with a 7-2 singles record at the No. 1 spot. Ekaterina Tour and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka each have 6-2 singles records for the Terrapins. Stanova is 8-0 overall in doubles play this season for Maryland, playing with three different doubles partners. Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan were the ITA Atlantic Regional doubles champions in the fall after defeating Turhan and Pomyatinskaya in the finals.
