HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall volleyball begun its 2017 season on Sunday by hosting an intrasquad scrimmage at the Cam Henderson Center. The white team came out with the win after taking all four sets that were played.

The white team featured senior Kayla Simmons, freshman Addisyn Rowe, sophomore Jac'cara Walker, freshman Katie Jacques, senior Justice Craft, sophomore Amber Weber and assistant coach Chris Rose.

The green team consisted of sophomore Madison Hill, senior Taylor Pelton, junior Lauren Mattmuller, junior Shelby Conley, freshman Jessa Long, sophomore Madelyn Cole, redshirt-sophomore Jayden Jacobs and redshirt-freshman Tiffany Isaacs.

Walker led the white team with 13 kills, while Rowe had nine and Jacques finished with eight. Weber led the team with 17 digs and Simmons finished with a team-high 41 assists. Craft had six kills, three digs and three blocks.

Hill, Pelton and Mattmuller tied for a team-high 10 kills on the green squad. Cole followed with eight, while Conley had seven and Isaacs with six. Long led the Herd with 18 digs and Cole had 25 assists. Jacobs had a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs.

"I thought the difference in the match was that the white team served and passed better than the green squad," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "After four days of practice, we shouldn't be expecting a ton of execution, but yet I thought there were some areas that were really good. I thought our block was moving really well, our libero's did a great job and there was some really scrappy defense. We've got a lot to work on, which is also a great sign because I think we are as good as we've been after a very short period. We've had three days, a day off, and one more day and then the scrimmage. I think it was kind of outstanding for the short time that this group has been together."

The Thundering Herd will host Eastern Kentucky University in its final scrimmage of the preseason on Friday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Marshall's regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 25 at the Austin Peay Tournament in Clarksville, Tenn. The Herd will compete against No. 19 Missouri, Austin Peay and UMKC.
