@HerdVolleyball Travels to the Spartan Invitational this Weekend

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall volleyball team will travel to the Spartan Invitational hosted by No. 23 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., from Sept. 1-2. The Thundering Herd opens the tournament against the Spartans on Friday at 7 p.m., while finishing the tournament on Saturday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. and San Diego State at 4:30 p.m.

HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall earned its first win of the season on Tuesday over regional rival Morehead State in three sets. Sophomore Jac'cara Walker and senior Taylor Pelton led the offensive attack for the Herd. Walker notched her third double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs. Pelton added 10 kills and two service aces.

The Thundering Herd currently has three players ranking in the top 10 in C-USA for kills, assists and digs. Walker ranks third in kills by averaging 4.33 kills per set, while Madelyn Cole ranks 10th with 6.73 assists per set. Amber Weber ranks ninth with 3.60 digs per set.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Michigan State (2-1) is currently ranked No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll that was released Monday, Aug. 28. The Spartans opened their season at the Hyatt Regency Invitational at Georgia Tech with wins over Furman and Auburn. MSU was defeated in four sets by Georgia Tech.

SCOUTING THE ISLANDERS
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-2) started off its 2017 campaign at the SMU Invitational against Rice, Mississippi State and SMU. The Islanders picked up a four-set win over Rice to begin the tournament, but fell in five to Mississippi State and was swept by SMU. Senior outside hitter Brittany Gilpin leads the Islanders in kills with 34 (2.83 k/s).

SCOUTING THE AZTECS
San Diego State (1-2) hosted the Aztec Invitational to begin the season last weekend. The Aztecs dropped matches against Eastern Kentucky and Cal State Northridge, while earning a win over Portland State. SDSU is led by Deja Harris with 30 kills and a .434 hitting percentage.
