HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall women's soccer dropped a physical 3-0 contest Sunday afternoon to No. 24 North Texas at Hoops Family Field.

With the loss, the Thundering Herd fell to 5-8-2 (3-5-0, Conference USA) for the season. The nationally ranked Mean Green improved to 10-1-2 (5-0-1, C-USA).

"The disappointing part is you get the loss, the truth is that [North Texas] is a really good team," head coach Kevin Long said. "They've had a winning record and dominated our conference so long for a reason. Part of what was valuable today is that the players recognized the difference between a game that is friendly and a game against a team that we really want to compete well against. We started the game better than against Rice."

In a contest that featured 31 combined fouls and two yellow cards, it was an even and back-and-forth half hour of action until the Mean Green struck first in the 36th minute off a corner kick. North Texas held on to the 1-0 lead into halftime.

North Texas doubled its lead in the 60th minute, 2-0. Junior goalkeeper Megan Bonelli made a superb save in the air coming off her line but the rebound went directly to a Mean Green forward for the strike into the net.

With Marshall throwing numbers forward, North Texas scored in the 81st minute to make the score 3-0.

Sophomore Rene Ross led the team with three total shots, two on goal. Bonelli in net for the Herd recorded six saves.

"We'll take our positives, but our backs are against the wall," Long said. "We really want two wins, need two wins, and probably need some help from some other teams in the conference to get back into the top-eight. We'll get to work on Tuesday in making that happen."

The Herd returns to action for its final home match of the season Sunday, October 21 against Louisiana Tech. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
