HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—After 110 minutes of soccer, Marshall women's soccer tied with Louisiana Tech, 2-2, Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
With the results, the Herd moves to 5-8-3 for the season, and 3-5-1 in Conference USA standings. The Lady Techsters move to 11-5-2 and 4-3-2 in conference play.
"[The draw] helps us a little bit, we're finding out now based on results whether or not it helps us or not," head coach Kevin Long said. "We needed six points towards the end of the season here, we really wanted to get to 15 points. We felt we would be in the tournament with that. With 13 points, if we win at WKU, we need a lot of help from opposing teams but there is a huge bottleneck at the bottom of the eight team tournament, a lot of teams currently there have 13 points. So, we knew we needed 13 to at least be a candidate."
Louisiana Tech scored first in the eighth minute directly off a corner kick. The Herd trailed for much of the first half until the 45th minute when a scramble on the goal line ended with junior Gabby Powers deflecting in her first goal of the season.
In the 60th minute, junior Farah Abu-Tayeh netted her sixth goal of the season on a left-footed strike off a Rene Ross pass. The Herd took the lead, 2-1.
Louisiana Tech equalized in the 64th minute, and the score remained 2-2 through regulation. After 20 minutes of overtime, neither team broke through for a game-winner.
Louisiana Tech and Marshall were level on the scoreboard and in total shots, with each team recording 12 shots. The Lady Techsters outshot Marshall on goal 11 to 7.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Bonelli recorded eight saves in net and is now third all-time in program history with 195, passing Kayla Johnson (1998-01).
"I thought we played really well on the ball," coach Long said. "We gave up a goal directly on a corner and we had a giveaway and their player just drives one home on a great finish. Can't take anything away from those finishes but disappointing because I think we played much better soccer and controlled the ball, and a point is nice but it may not be enough for us."
Marshall concluded its home slate on Sunday, and needs a win and three points at WKU for a potential chance to make the eight team Conference USA Tournament.
The Herd returns to action for its final regular season contest on Friday, Oct. 26 at WKU. Kickoff from Bowling Green, Kentucky is set for 8 p.m. ET.
