Winter Garden, Fla. native earns honor
IRVING, Tx. – Marshall redshirt senior defensive lineman Malik Thompson was announced as Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week Monday by the league office.
Thompson finished with a career-high nine tackles (five of FAU star RB Devin Singletary) and had a hand in two turnovers as he posted his first-ever forced fumble and his first-career interception in Marshall's 31-7 defeat of visiting Florida Atlantic last Saturday.
Thompson ripped the ball away from FAU's Kerrith Whyte, Jr. in the second quarter and picked off a Chris Robison third-quarter pass at the Owls' 27 to set up the Thundering Herd's second touchdown. Thompson helped lead a Marshall defensive effort that posted five takeaways and held FAU to seven points (28 below its season average) and a 3-for-17 showing on third down. The Herd has still not allowed a first-quarter touchdown in 10 consecutive games, the nation's second-longest streak.
The Thundering Herd (5-2 overall, 3-1 Conference USA) is off this weekend. It will travel to Southern Miss (3-3, 2-1) for a 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT kickoff on Saturday, November 3.
