HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a dominating 82-29 victory over the Bluefield State Big Blues, Tuesday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 1-3 and the Big Blues fall to 3-3.
"It was good to get the win," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "Thought we took care of business. I was really pleased with our second half. In the first half we were a little wild defensively, tried to make a lot of things happen. We were playing with a decent amount of effort but just out of position on some things.
"We did a much better job in the second half, settling down and holding them to 10 points. We rebounded a lot better in the second half as well. We were a lot more aggressive on offense in the right fashion in the second half. Our shooting percentage is still pretty low, but I want them to keep shooting because I think the lid will eventually come off and we will be a good offensive team."
Senior Shayna Gore scored a game-high 22 points and reached the 1,500-point milestone in the second quarter. Gore continues to be perfect from the free throw to begin the season, going 5-for-5 and is now 15-for-15 for the year. Sophomore Kristen Mayo was next with 13 points and added four boards and two assists. Redshirt senior Taylor Porter could be seen flying all over the court with numerous hustle plays, and chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and five steals. Redshirt junior Khadaijia Brooks finished two points short of a double-double with 11 rebounds and eight points. Brooks also had two blocks and two steals. Sophomore Taylor Pearson scored four points and had six boards.
Freshman Lorelei Roper had a career-day with seven points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal. Fellow classmate Kia Sivils scored four points, grabbed four rebounds and had three assists and no turnovers. Junior Princess Clemons also had eight boards in the contest as Marshall finished the day with 64 rebounds. Freshman Aeriel Adkins saw her first action of the season and grabbed four rebounds in six minutes of play. Junior Jovana Vucetic scored her first points of the season and added two rebounds and an assist. Redshirt junior Tana Driver had four assists and sophomore Brianna Toney had three boards and two blocks.
The Herd led from start to finish. Gore started the game with a three on the first possession and Marshall kept rolling from there. The Herd held a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 24-12. The Marshall defense tightened its grip from the second quarter on allowing seven points in the second, four points in the third and six in the fourth.
Bluefield State shot 31.6 percent (6-19) in the first quarter and went down from there. The Big Blues hit 21.4 percent (3-14) in the second, 10.0 percent (1-10) in the third and 15.4 percent (2-13) in the fourth. The Herd defense forced Bluefield State into 30 turnovers while committing just 12.
Marshall heads back out on the road for its next contest on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m., against Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. The Herd returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m., against Evansville.
