RICHMOND, Ky. – Behind a 30-point game from senior guard C.J. Burks, the Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team defeated Eastern Kentucky by 28, 105-77, on the road to begin the 2018-19 season Wednesday. The 28-point margin is the second-largest for a Herd road opener going back to the 1954-55 campaign.
This was the 10th game for Marshall with 100 or more points under fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni, including the fifth in the last two seasons.
"I thought we played well," D'Antoni said. "They played extremely hard. You never know what you're going to get the first game. Whether you're going to have the intensity it takes to win or not. There's a lot of expectations on this team."
Burks went 12 for 15 from the field, draining two of his four three-point attempts, and going 4 of 5 from the free-throw line for his game-high 30 points. The senior guard also had three assists and a pair of steals on his stat line.
Senior guard Jon Elmore had a 20-point night. Elmore made five buckets on 16 shots, including a three, while going 9 of 13 from the charity-stripe. He also had a game-high six dishes to go with a career-high three rejections.
Freshman guard Taevion Kinsey and sophomore forward Jannson Williams close out the group of four Marshall players with 10 or more points. Kinsey scored 14 points in his Herd debut on a 5 for 7 shooting night, with Williams going 5 of 8 for 11.
Senior guard Rondale Watson brought down a career-high 10 rebounds and tied his career-high in assists with five, while falling two points short of a double-double with eight.
It was a feeling out period during the first five minutes of the game, with the Colonels holding a 10-9 lead. However, that would be the last EKU lead of the game. Marshall went on a 32-6 run across the next eight minutes. The Herd shot 66.7 percent (12-18) from the field, including 5 of 9 from beyond the arc, as they took a 40-16 lead with 6:59 remaining in the half.
With the Colonel crowd in a frenzy after a Nick Mayo dunk, Elmore buried a three-pointer to end the half and silence the crowd as the Herd led 57-38 at the break.
Marshall shot 55.3 percent from the field, 40 percent from deep, while holding EKU to 31 percent from and just 11.1 percent from three-point range in opening half.
The second-half was cruise control for the Herd as their lead was at least 20 points for all, but just under a minute in the final stanza. Marshall saw its largest lead of the game with 34 when sophomore guard Jarrod West drained a three to make it 98-64 with 3:46 left in the game.
The Herd finished the game 38 of 76 from the field (50 percent) and 8 for 23 (34.8 percent) on three-point attempts, while outrebounding EKU 53-49. Marshall also dominated points in the paint (56-42), points off turnovers (25-15) and fast break points (18-4).
