CHARLOTTE – The No. 5 seed Marshall men's soccer team advances to the semi-final round of the Conference USA Championship Tournament for the second-straight year after defeating No. 4 seed FIU, 2-1.
Sophomore JP Rylah and junior Illal Osmanu score for the Herd. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Paulo Pita finished with seven saves.
"Wow what a crazy match that was," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "It was an even first half, in which Paulo made some great saves, and we missed some excellent chances ourselves. Second half we stepped up a gear and really caused them some problems. I thought until his (two yellows), Illal was immense. He showed that he is capable of playing at the next level. We'll just have to work on him keeping his head.
"Chris Taibi was also excellent before he got injured. Jan-Erik really shut down a very dangerous player today and showed why he deserved an all-freshman team nomination. JP worked really well up front and took his goal really well. It was an excellent battling team performance. Hopefully we replicate the good parts of it on Friday."
The teams battled through a scoreless first half as both squads recorded seven shots, however FIU had five on goal to Marshall's one. Pita was there each time to stop the Panthers attempts and keep it scoreless.
It didn't take long in the second half to get the scoring started as Rylah found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Kelan Swales, just one minute and 29 seconds into the period. It was Rylah's fourth goal of the year. Nearly 30 minutes later, the Panthers scored the equalizer in the 75th minute.
Osmanu gave Marshall back the lead in the 84th minute as he knocked in a rebound off a shot from junior Jonas Westmeyer. It was Osmanu's third goal of the season.
The Panthers had an opportunity to tie the match on a penalty kick with 40 seconds remaining. Santiago Pantino took the kick and hit the shot off the crossbar and then Marshall cleared the ball back down field.
The Herd improves to 8-8-3 this season and will now move on to play the No. 1 seeded Kentucky Wildcats. Kickoff for the semi-final round match is set for Friday, Nov. 9 at 4:30 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
