Box Score | Dan D'Antoni Press Conference
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball took its 100th meeting with Morehead State, 76-64, at the Cam Henderson Center Monday night to end a three-game losing streak.
Marshall moves to 6-4 with the victory as the Eagles fall to 3-6.
"The first half we played well," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "They're a tough ball club. They played some tough road trips at Syracuse and another big one at UCONN. They've been on the road. It's hard for them similar to our schedule."
Senior guard Jon Elmore helped lead the Herd by shooting 9 of 18 from the field, including 7 of 13 from beyond the arc, and made both of his free-throws for a game-high 27 points. Elmore added four assists, three steals and three boards to his line for the game.
Sophomore forward Jannson Williams had a 50 percent shooting night from the field and from three-point range for 14 points. Williams also went 4 for 5 from the charity stripe while collecting eight rebounds and blocking two shots in the contest.
Senior guard C.J. Burks brought up the end of a trio of Herd players in double-figures with 10 points. Burks assisted on four makes, grabbed six rebounds and recorded a pair of takeaways.
Morehead State took an early two-point lead, 5-3, just under four minutes into the game. The Herd, however, went on a 23-2 run over the next 6:35 to take a 26-7 lead. The Herd led at halftime 42-24. Marshall made 51.6 of its shots in the first half.
Marshall grabbed its largest lead of 22 points, 58-36, on a Williams three-pointer with 15:59 remaining in the game. The Eagles battled back and got its deficit under 20, but the Herd held on for the victory by a 12-point final margin.
The Eagles only outrebounded the Herd by 1, 40-39, as Marshall won the turnover battle, 18-20.
The Herd also outscored the Eagles in the paint 28-26, while holding the Eagles to just 35.1 percent shooting from the field.
"That's about the same team who beat us last year. I think we're playing better at this stage then we did last year. We just have to keep getting better," D'Antoni said.
