HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd men's basketball falls to Toledo in overtime, 75-74, after making a valiant second-half comeback Saturday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd falls to 5-4 with the loss as the Rockets extended its winning streak to seven and move to 9-1 on the season.
"It took us too long to wake up," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "The physical intensity wasn't there and mentally we weren't there. We looked unsure of ourselves. You can't go down 19 points against a team that's 8-1 and think you're going to come back and win."
Senior guard Rondale Watson collected his first-career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Watson went six of eight from the field and added a pair of helpers and a block to his stat line.
Senior guards Jon Elmore and C.J. Burks each went seven of 17 from the field with six rebounds. Elmore scored a game-high 21 points with a game-high five assists, while Burks recorded a 17-point evening with a steal, block and helper added to his night.
Redshirt freshman Iran Bennett brought up the rear of four Herd players in double-figures with 11 points on a five of nine night from the field. Bennett also brought down five boards, rejected three shots and recorded three steals.
Sophomore guard Jarrod West tied for the game-high with four steals.
Despite trailing 41-23 at halftime and Toledo making its first two shots of the half, Marshall held the Rockets without a make from the field for over six minutes and went on a 16-3 run. The run cut the Rockets' 21-point lead to six, 49-43, with 12:09 left in the half and ended with a dunk by Bennett.
The Herd continued to push as it went on another large run, 14-2 across a five-minute span, culminating with a dunk from freshman guard Taevion Kinsey and a layup by Watson to garner its first lead, 57-55, with 5:38 remaining in the ball game.
Marshall pushed its lead to five with just over a minute remaining in the game, but Toledo's Jaelan Sanford hit made a layup and hit an off balance three-pointer to tie the game with five seconds left. Elmore put up a three, but it was blocked as the two teams went to overtime.
The Herd held the Rockets to just seven made shots on 30 attempts (23.3 percent) and only three of 15 from beyond the arc in the second half, while making 16 of 31 shots from the field, including four of 10 on three-point attempts.
In overtime the team's traded makes until Burks hit a jumper to give Marshall a 74-73 with 26 ticks left in the extra period. Toledo's Marreon Jackson took the ball and made a floater as the eventual game-winning shot with two second remaining.
Marshall dominated the paint, 42-26, as Toledo won the battle from the charity stripe making 13 of its 19 attempts to Marshall's eight of 18 night from the free-throw line.
The Rockets took second-chance points 24-4, but the Herd won points off turnovers 19-9.
