Marshall Completes Day One at Virginia Technotational

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Marshall Swimming and Diving turned in an impressive team performance Friday night at the Virginia Tech Technotational.
The Herd began the night with a third-place finish in the 200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Rachael DePietro, Lauren Cowher, Hannah Robins and Darby Coles completed the distance in 1:35.03, the sixth-fastest time in school history.
Anna Lynch and Madi Pulfer raced to a 1-2 finish in the 500 Freestyle. Both posted season-best times (4:54.81) and (4:59.50), respectively. Angelica Di Marzio was fourth (5:00.97). In the Consolation Final, Cara Martin was the “outside smoke”, winning the heat in a season-best 5:03.18, just shy of her lifetime best. Savannah Ruedt was 11th (5:04.33), Oda Gjerde 13th (5:05.84) and Brittany Wilkerson 14th (5:10.93).
The following event, Marshall continued its dominance with a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 Individual Medley. Catherine Bendiewicz led the Herd in 2:02.99. Emma Lockyer lowered her lifetime best for the second time on the day to 2:03.12 and Caroline Wanner turned in a season-best 2:04.66. In the Consolation Final, Maggie Stovall was second in the heat, 10th overall (2:08.13) and Maddie Schaffer 12th (2:08.57). Marshall picked up another heat win in the Bonus Final with Shir Wasserman’s season-best 2:10.12 for 17th overall, followed by Justine Jagga in 18th (2:10.63).
Marshall sprinters took the stage next. Cowher finished third in 23.64. Robins won the Consolation Final in 24.12 for ninth overall. Coles finished 13th (24.40) and Jordyn O’Dell was 14th (24.55).
In the last event of the evening (400 Medley Relay), Marshall combined for the seventh-fastest time in program history. O’Dell, Rachel Hughes, Robins and Cowher finished second to host Virginia Tech in 3:50.20.
“This was an excellent day,” head coach Bill Tramel said after the session. “The energy we brought to the deck was a big part of our success. The challenge will be duplicating that energy tomorrow morning. It’s fun swimming fast. We look forward to having two more days of fun.”
