SEVIERVILLE, Tn. - Marshall's men's and women's golf teams each sit in second place following the first day of competition at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate at the Sevierville Golf Club.

Senior Alex Weiss leads the field on the men's side as he fired a four-under 68, one shot ahead of Eastern Kentucky's Edvin Lindgren. In the team standings, the Thundering Herd (+2, 290) trails the Colonels by three strokes and is in a tie for second with Austin Peay. Rounding out the Marshall team was: Cameron Root and Will Straub (E, 72) in a tie for 11th and Cole More and Ben Roeder (+6. 78) are tied for 55th. Thomas Frazier (+9, 81) is tied for 68th.

"It was a good day for us and had potential to be a great day," said Marshall head coach Matt Grobe. "Alex played a great round today. It was exciting to see Cameron and Will both up even-par 72s. We struggled a little trying to get that last score for the team, but it was a good day. I am looking forward to watching the guys compete tomorrow and I am hoping we can improve on a good first round."

Ylva Forlund led the Marshall women with a four-over 75 as the Thundering Herd (+22, 306) sits in second behind Jacksonville State (+15, 299). Kerry Parks finished with a 76 (T-11th), followed by Stormy Randazzo (T14th, 77) and Shelby Brackmuller (T17th, 78). Leigha Holt also posted an 82 (T-35th).

"We struggled to get things going today, but we fought back and didn't give up on our teammates," Thundering Herd head coach Brooke Burkhammer. That's what I want every time we tee it up. Tomorrow will be a better day for the Herd."

Second-round play continues Monday.
