Weiss Selected as Individual to NCAA Raleigh Regional

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Thundering Herd men's golfer Alex Weiss was one of 45 players to earn an individual bid into the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Committee announced Wednesday evening.
Weiss, who is the first Herd individual to earn a regional appearance since Nathan Kerns in 2013, has been selected to play in the Raleigh Regional from May 14-16 at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
"I'm very excited to compete at regionals and have a chance to go to the NCAA Championship," Weiss said. "It's a goal that I've had in mind since I stepped on campus my freshman year. To see the results after four years of work is very special. I'm really looking forward to heading to Raleigh, so I can represent Marshall and try to get us into the national championship."
Weiss' field will consist of four other individuals in the Raleigh Regional, including Dawson Armstrong (Lipscomb), Mark Lawrence (Virginia Tech), Conor Purcell (Charlotte) and Brendan MacDougall (High Point).
"I am so excited for Alex," head coach Matt Grobe said. "He has worked hard for this since he showed up on campus. Alex spends every day trying to get and that hard work has paid off. As a coach, I am excited about watching Alex compete again and seeing his collegiate career continue."
This season, the senior has a stroke average of 70.77, which is the best finish for a Marshall golfer in program history, beating the previous best of Kerns who had a 71.72 stroke average during the 2012-13 season. Weiss has been the top finisher for the Herd in all nine tournaments this season, while he has led the team in wins (2), top five finishes (6) and top 15 finishes (7).
The selection caps off a special day for Weiss, who was also selected to the All-Conference USA second team, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. Weiss became the first Marshall golfer to earn the award since Kerns in 2013.
The NCAA National Championships will be played May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
