Thundering Herd continues to rack up national honors

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Football continued to accrue national recognition Thursday as senior running back Keion Davis was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List and senior linebacker Chase Hancock was picked for the Wuerffel Award Watch List.

Davis, who was a second-team all-Conference USA selection at kick returner in 2017, averaged 30.4 yards per return (seventh nationally) and had a pair of runbacks for touchdown in the season-opening win over Miami (Ohio). He also led the team in carries (182) and all-purpose yardage (1,494), was second in rushing yardage (812) and was tied for third in scoring (48 points).

The Paul Hornung Award, now in its ninth season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner presented by Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine, to be held at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville in March 2019. This will be The Paul Hornung Award's third year as an associate member of the National College Football Awards Association. Fan voting will open in late September and factor into the selection of the finalists and winner.

Hancock, who was also named to the AllState Good Works Team Watch List earlier this month, has been a preseason All-Conference USA selection by the league's head coaches and Athlon. He led Marshall with 128 tackles (second-highest in C-USA) and 9.5 tackles for loss last year, en route to second-team all-league and team MVP honors. The Daniels, W.Va. native also posted seven pass breakups, two sacks and two fumble recoveries.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 1 and finalists will be announced on November 19. The formal announcement of the 2018 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City on December 4. The presentation of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 50th All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 15, 2019 in Fort Walton Beach.
