HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall men's soccer defeated Duquesne 1-0, in front of a crowd of over 700 in the team's first contest of the season Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
A third minute goal from junior Jonas Westmeyer was the difference in a fast paced contest between the two sides. The Herd begins the season at 1-0-0 as the Dukes fell to 0-1-0.
The second season for Marshall men's soccer under head coach Chris Grassie jumped out to a roaring start when freshman forward Kelan Swales placed a ball from the far right side perfectly on the foot of Westmeyer who buried the one-time shot. The midfielder from Beckum, Germany scored his first career goal for the Herd.
"First three minutes I thought we played extremely well," Grassie said. "We kind of let off after the goal and we didn't really take our chances, we should have been probably up three or four-nil going into halftime so it would have been nice to see us finish the half up more than one goal. But it was a solid scrappy college performance."
Paulo Pita in net for Marshall saved the only shot he faced in the 17th minute on a header off a corner kick. The Herd defense allowed only three total Duquesne shots.
The Herd statistically dominated the Dukes, and led the contest in shots (14-3), shots on goal (5-1), and corner kicks (6-5).
Sophomore midfielder Pedro Dolabella led Marshall with six total shots and two shots on target. Eight different Herd players recorded at least one shot in the contest.
Marshall returns to action Monday, Aug. 27 against Oakland University at Hoops Family Field at 7 p.m. The Grizzlies tied Western Illinois 1-1 in its first contest of the season.
"It'll be tough," Grassie said. "[Oakland] play similar to Duquesne, they're probably a little more advanced, a little more forward than [Duquesne]. We have to make sure we manage playing against the counter-attack and manage where our position is on the field when we have the ball."
