HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team, after defeating Duquesne 1-0 in the season-opener, welcomes the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies to Hoops Family Field. The second-straight home match of the 2018 season is set for Monday at 7 p.m.

The Thundering Herd is 1-0 to start the season while the Oakland is 0-0-1. The two teams have met just three times over the years with Marshall leading the all-time series 2-1. Oakland won the last meeting back in 2013 (2-0) in Huntington.

Fans who cannot attend the match can tune in through HerdVision on C-USAtv, as Jake Griffith will have the call, as well as on 88-1 WMUL-FM on-air and online at www.marshall.edu/wmul through one of the Listen Live links.

"The lads played well against Duquesne on Friday," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "For stretches in both halves, we moved the ball extremely well, and created some great scoring opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. Defensively, we limited them to only one real chance."

The Herd jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as freshman Kelan Swales found junior Jonas Westmeyer for a goal in the third minute. Marshall outshot Duquesne 14-3 as the Herd defense stifled the Dukes attack. Senior Chris Taibi helped to lead a defense that continually got the ball back upfield to its playmakers. Junior keeper Paulo Pita made the save on Duquesne's lone shot on goal.

"On Monday I am expecting to be able to take greater strides with the possession aspect of our game so that we are more purposeful," coach Grassie said. "Because of the short preseason allotted by the NCAA, no team will be match fit at this stage of the season, so we have to manage those times in the game, when our tempo drops.

"I expect Oakland to be well organized, and full of fight against us. They have some dangerous players that we will have to deal with. It will be a good test for our lads."

The Golden Grizzlies played to 1-1 draw with Western Illinois at home for the season-opener. The Leathernecks scored in the 73rd minute and then Oakland tied the match with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation. Redshirt freshman Napoleon Outlaw III knocked in a rebound to help send the match to overtime. Redshirt sophomore Sullivan Lauderdale recorded three saves. Oakland outshot Western Illinois 21-8 and had seven shots on goal.

The Golden Grizzlies went 6-10-2 in 2017 with a 3-5-1 record in Horizon League play. Redshirt junior Nebojsa Popovic is the returning high-scorer as he recorded four goals and had six assists a year ago. Lauderdale was one of four keepers to see action this past season and recorded the second most minutes in the net with 459. He made 17 saves, allowed 13 goals and recorded one shutout.
