Herd Volleyball Closes Dayton Invitational with Loss to Ball State

8/25/2018 7:40:00 PM | Volleyball

Six Herd players registered four or more kills

DAYTON, Ohio—Marshall volleyball concluded play at the Dayton Invitational Saturday with a 3-0 loss to the Ball State Cardinals (25-20, 25-21, 25-15).

"We continue to give our opponent the advantage right at the start of each set," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We just have to be better at being engaged through the first 10 points. Always playing from behind, especially for such an inexperienced team, puts a lot of stress on the group. That's on myself and the coaching staff to find a way to get better from the start."

The Herd (0-3) was led by Ciara Debell with six kills and six digs. Mion Weldon and Shelby Conley added five kills apiece, while Ivana Trencheva, Lauren Mattmuller and Sarah Schank tallied four kills apiece. Gabrielle Coulter recorded 27 assists, while Amber Weber tallied nine digs. Ball State (2-1) was led by Ellie Dunn with 13 kills and eight digs, and Jessica Lindsey added 10 kills for the Cardinals.

The Herd and Cardinals began the first set by trading runs, with Ball State's early three-point run being answered with kills by Mattmuller and Debell. A five-point Herd run, highlighted by four kills by Debell, gave Marshall a 16-15 lead. Ball State responded by taking 10 of the next 14 points and, after Marshall used both of its timeouts, clinched a 25-20 first set win.

Ball State opened the second set by taking nine of the first 12 points, forcing a Marshall timeout in the process. The Cardinals continued to extend their lead into double-digits, 21-10, before the Herd took eight of 10 points to cut its deficit in half, 23-18. A late three-point Herd run was not enough to prevent Ball State from taking the second set, 25-21, and taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Ball State's momentum from the second set continued into the third set, as the Cardinals took 12 of the first 14 points. Kills from Schank and Michaela Ahlenslager cut the Cardinals lead to 13-7. Ball State limited the Herd to 10 kills in the set and extended its lead to double-digits, 23-13, after a service ace. A kill by Dunn clinched the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0, for the Cardinals.

"We had some players perform well throughout the weekend, but we need to find one strong heartbeat if we are going to be successful," Jacobs said.

The Herd is back in action Tuesday when it takes on Morehead State at 6 p.m. The match will be played in Gullickson Gym while the Henderson Center is undergoing an installation of a new center-hung videoboard.
