Match originally scheduled for Monday the 13th was moved up to Friday the 10th

HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – The Marshall University men's soccer opens its 2018 campaign Friday night with an exhibition match against the Red Storm of Rio Grande University. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

"It's two days into preseason, so we're expecting to get a good 45 minutes against tough opposition," head coach Chris Grassie said. "Rio Grande is always very good. If we can show our fitness level and start to add in a few small pieces, that's all we're expecting."

The Herd finished the 2017 season 8-10-2 overall and 3-5-0 in Conference USA play. Marshall secured a berth to the C-USA Championships as the No. 6 seed, eliminating No. 3 seed Kentucky, 1-0, in the first round.

As for the Red Storm, Rio Grande ended the 2017 season 14-2-2 overall, finishing No.16 in the final NAIA poll of the season. Rio Grande fell in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament, losing 5-4 to Cardinal Stritch University.

This will mark the second exhibition meeting in three seasons between the two programs. Last year's scheduled exhibition was later cancelled due to weather.

There will be plenty of new faces when the Herd suits up on Friday night. Marshall's 2018 roster sports 16 newcomers, including 11 incoming freshmen.

Friday's exhibition will be the first of two preseason matches for Herd, before it opens the regular season with a home contest against Duquesne on August 24.
