INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Marshall men's soccer team battled back with three second-half goals but ultimately fell in overtime at Butler, Wednesday night at the Sellick Bowl.
The Thundering Herd falls to 2-4-2 overall. The Bulldogs improve to 2-5-1.
"Our guys battled back well given the circumstances," Herd head coach Chris Grassie.
Marshall struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the first half. The Herd had four total shots but zero on goal and had just one corner kick. Butler scored first in the 28th minute and then increased its lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later. The Bulldogs led 2-0 after the first 45 minutes.
In didn't take long for the excitement to pick up in the second half. Four minutes and 40 seconds into the second half, junior Carlos Diaz-Salcedo took a pass from freshman Vinicius Fernandes and with one touch knocked it into the back of the net to get the Herd on the board. In the 74th minute freshman Gianni Bouzoukis nabbed a turnover and beat the defense and the keeper, scoring the equalizer.
Butler then took the lead back in the 84th minute. However, Marshall kept fighting and junior Illal Osmanu headed in a pass from junior Jonas Westmeyer and scored another equalizer with just 5.4 seconds remaining in regulation. It was Osmanu's first career goal. The teams headed to overtime tied at 3-3.
The match was close to going into the second overtime before Butler scored the game-winner with 10 seconds left.
Marshall finally returns to Hoops Family Field on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., against Old Dominion. It will be the Herd's first home match since Sept. 7 against FIU.
