NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall women's soccer team shutout the Old Dominion Monarchs from the ODU Soccer Complex Friday night. Junior Marah Abu-Tayeh scored her sixth goal of the season and junior keeper Megan Bonelli made three saves in her return to the lineup.

The Thundering Herd improves to 5-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in Conference USA. The Monarchs fall to 3-6-2 and 0-3-0 in conference play.

"They were really good and talented group that I wouldn't be surprised seeing them finish strongly," Herd head coach Kevin Long said of ODU. "Tonight was a game where we just battled. ODU took us off our game and to find success, we knew it would come to our will to compete. We had to challenge every moment and our persistence really paid off.

"A shutout against a really good ODU team on the road, we will sleep well but we start aiming at Sunday's match immediately."

Marshall did not get much going offensively in the first half with just one shot while Old Dominion managed five shots with two on goal. The first shot on goal was blocked by the Marshall defense and then Bonelli made the save in the 42nd minute. It was Bonelli first action since exiting with injury in the second half at UTEP on Sept. 20.

The Monarchs outshot Marshall 9-2 in the second half, but the Herd was successful as Abu-Tayeh took a leading pass from sophomore Rene Ross and knocked it passed the keeper to the left side in the 77th minute. Bonelli made two great saves late in the half including a diving punch out to her right side. The Herd defense held on over the final few minutes to grab the victory.

Friday night was Marshall's second road conference victory and third-straight win.

The Herd stays on the road this weekend, heading south to Charlotte for a Sunday match against the 49ers. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
