CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Marshall women's soccer struck first, but fell 3-2 Sunday afternoon to Conference USA table leaders the Charlotte 49ers at Transamerica Field.

The Herd fell to 5-5-2 overall and 3-2 in Conference USA play. Charlotte improved to 8-3 and 4-0 in conference action.

"Charlotte was very good and really well coach," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "While getting on the scoreboard early, that ramped up the speed of play and we were never able to catch up. We still were able to be dangerous at times but we need to reduce our opponents chances. We learn from our weekend, rest, and get ready for UTSA."

Marshall began with a perfect start when in the second minute Jayne Lawman wrapped her shot from outside the 18-yard box past the outstretched Charlotte goalie for an early 1-0 lead. The redshirt junior from Winfield, W.Va., netted her third goal of the season.

The 49ers answered quickly in the ninth minute to even the contest at 1-1. The match remained level at the half until Charlotte went ahead 2-1 just three minutes into the second half in the 48th minute.

In the 83rd minute, Charlotte scored again in what proved to be the game-winner on a penalty kick.

Junior Marah Abu-Tayeh gave Marshall a chance late in the contest with a goal in the 88th minute. Her initial shot went past the Charlotte keeper and hit the post, but she followed her shot and tapped in her seventh goal of the season to pull the Herd within a goal, 3-2.

Charlotte successfully ran out the clock in the final 2 minutes and 18 seconds that followed Abu-Tayeh's goal.

Junior keeper Megan Bonelli tied a season-high 10 saves in the contest. The 49ers outshot Marshall 23-4.

The Herd will continue Conference USA play on the road next Sunday, October 7 for a 2 p.m. contest at UTSA.
