Walter Advances to Finals at Hokie Fall Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Freshman Victoria Walter won a pair of three-set matches Saturday to advance to the championship match of the Leadership Singles Flight at the Hokie Fall Invite.

"Great effort from all the players today," head coach John Mercer said. "Excited to have Victoria get to the final of her flight. Overall, we had excellent results for such a young team."

Walter rallied from down a set to defeat James Madison's Diane Flament, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, then defeated Iowa State's Caroline Gibbons, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Walter will play Iowa State's Annabella Bonadonna in the championship match.

In the Herd's other singles matches, Liz Stefancic will compete in the third place match of the Duty Singles Flight. Stefancic defeated Penn State's Olivia Rohrbacher in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to VCU's Maria Alcaide, 6-2, 6-4. Anna Smith will play for fifth place in the Ut Prosim bracket after losing to Virginia Tech's Nika Kozar in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Smith defeated West Virgina's Paula Goetz by retirement. Madi Ballow was defeated by West Virginia's Giovanna Caputo, 7-6 (4), 6-4, and Appalachian State's Teodora Sevo, 6-3, 6-2.

In Marshall's lone doubles match of the day, Walter and Stefancic defeated West Virginia's Christina Jordan and Caputo, 8-7 (5).

The Herd wraps up play at the Hokie Fall Invite Sunday, with play beginning at 9 a.m.
