DAYTON, Ohio – On a hot Monday evening, the Marshall men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with the Dayton Flyers from Baujan Field.
The Thundering Herd is now 2-1-1 and the Flyers move to 2-0-2. Seniors Chris Taibi and John Pappas along with redshirt junior Paulo Pita were named to the Dayton Classic All-Tournament team.
"I think the in game stats don't tell the real story," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We'll wait for our own analysis, but we did a great job in possession and we again created a ton of chances. We didn't look like conceding a goal tonight if we played until dawn.
"Dayton is a solid team to play against, they played direct and lived for the knockdowns. I thought our lads did a tremendous job dealing with that, and then having the composure to play out. I'm happy with the result, for the effort our guys put in all weekend. Two shutouts is a very positive thing, as with all the chances we are creating we will win a lot of matches when we play like that."
The Flyers outshot Marshall 11-4 in the first half, however the Herd managed the only shot on goal. Taibi had a header attempt that was knocked away by Federico Barrios. The Marshall defense played well in making it difficult on the shot attempts for the Flyers. Marshall slowly began to take some possession control late in the first half but were unable to capitalize.
The second started with Dayton attacking right from the whistle, but again another shot off the mark. The Herd put together more of an attack in the second half with six shots including three on goal. The Flyers finally put some shots on target, but Pita made all three saves. By the end of regulation Dayton led in total shots 20-10, but the Herd led in shots on goal 4-3.
Dayton attempted four shots in the overtime period with none on the mark. Both teams combined to take just three shots in the second overtime. Marshall with the only shot on goal in the second overtime.
The Herd returns to Hoops Family Field to begin Conference USA action. The FIU Panthers come to Huntington on Friday, Sept. 7, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
