HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall men's soccer fell to the FIU Panthers in overtime, 2-1, Friday night in the team's Conference USA opener at Hoops Family Field.
Marshall moves to 2-2-1 as FIU earned its first win of the season and improved to 1-3-0. The start to the contest was delayed over 80 minutes due to lightning in the Huntington area.
Fresh out of the weather delay, freshman Vinicius Fernandes put Marshall ahead early in the sixth minute. He capitalized on a defensive error by the Panthers and put away his first career goal for the Thundering Herd past the FIU goalkeeper.
FIU equalized in the 40th minute on a goal from Santiago Patino. Patino also scored the game-winner in sudden death overtime, less than three minutes into the first overtime period.
"We couldn't wait to get going and we had a great start to the game, scoring within six minutes," head coach Chris Grassie said. "They were a good team, they had some moments in the match. We talked about Patino before the game and we left him unmarked on a corner kick and then we let him spin us and bully us in the box, so that was disappointing.
"We know we should have been three, four-nil up, we shouldn't have even put ourselves in that situation. I thought during the second half, we have got to score those chances. You get punished."
In a contest played mainly in the midfield, each team recorded 10 total shots. FIU recorded four shots on goal while the Herd placed two shots on target. Redshirt junior Paulo Pita recorded two saves in goal for Marshall.
The Herd recorded five corner kicks, one more than FIU. Four players including the goal scorer Fernandes recorded two shots, including Kelan Swales, Pedro Dolabella, and Jamil Roberts. Dolabella recorded the second shot on target other than Fernandes.
The Herd hits the road for four straight contests, beginning Tuesday, September 11 at ACC opposition Virginia. Marshall returns home Saturday, September 29 against Old Dominion.
