CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team takes to the road at No. 19 Virginia. Kickoff is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Thundering Herd is 2-2-1 and the Cavaliers enter at 1-0-2.
"We're all very glad to have a match coming up so we can take out some of our frustrations from Friday," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. I thought we played well, and did enough to win the match against FIU, with just a few errors that cost us. We've had some time off this weekend, and we saw at training today, the guys are again chomping at the bit.
"We all know we're a good team, we just have to start putting more marks in the win column when we are the better team in a match. We know we have to start taking our chances and UVA provides an important opportunity for us to start doing that."
The Herd fell in overtime to the FIU Panthers, 2-1, Friday night. Freshman Vinicius Fernandes became the fifth Herd player to score a goal this season. Jonas Westmeyer, Kelan Swales, Gianni Bouzoukis and JP Rylah are the others. Keeper Paulo Pita continues to be the workhorse in goal for Marshall logging all 472 minutes. Pita has 15 saves and has allowed five goals this season.
Virginia started the season with a 1-0 victory over then No. 19 New Hampshire. A match against Elon was postponed due to weather and then the Cavaliers tied Maryland (0-0) and Virginia Tech (1-1). Nathaniel Crofts and Joe Bell have scored one goal each this season. Keeper Colin Shutler has recorded 17 saves and allowed just one goal. The Cavaliers finished 2017 with a record of 12-4-5, fell to Wake Forest in penalty kicks in the ACC Championship and then was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Fordham, 1-0.
Marshall is 0-5 all-time against Virginia. The last time these two teams met was 2004 in Charlottesville.
The match at UVA is the beginning of four-straight road contests for Marshall. The Herd plays at South Carolina (Sept. 16), at UAB (Sept. 22) and at Butler (Sept. 26) before returning home against Old Dominion on Sept. 29.
