HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—The Marshall volleyball team defeated the Ohio Bobcats in a four-set contest (25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22), Wednesday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd evened its record to 4-4 this season as the Bobcats fell to 2-5.
Freshmen Joelle Coulter and Gabrielle Coulter led the way for the Herd. J. Coulter finished with 22 kills and G. Coulter recorded 41 assists. Junior Amber Weber led the team with 24 digs.
Marshall won the first ever contest in any sport in the Cam Henderson Center with the new state-of-the-art Daktronics center hung videoboard and basket stanchion display.
The Herd is now 2-0 at home this season.
"We did a lot of things that we do well," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We serve tough and we dig the ball. Those are the things we have to do just to help ourselves because we're just not a big team. We're so proud of the young kids. Our young kids really stepped up tonight."
In the first set, the Herd closed things out after a service error from Ohio. The opener was a back-and-forth battle when, tied at 20, Marshall took five of the final six points. The second set saw the Bobcats bounce back. Tied at 12, Ohio took eight of 11 points to take a stronghold on the set.
Similar to the first two sets, the third set was an even battle. Tied at 13, Marshal took eight of the next 10 points to take an advantage. Kills from redshirt sophomore Ciara DeBell and freshman Isa Dostal closed out the third set.
Marshall took nine of the final 12 points in the fourth and final set to seal the victory. Down 19-16, kills by J. Coulter started and ended the span of points for the Herd.
"Jojo (Coulter) had a super game, she just killed it," Jacobs said. "A .400 hitting percentage, 22 kills, a kill rate higher than 50 percent. She's a talented player, but she's young. To have that night, coming back from an ankle injury, is just special."
Marshall travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Hampton Inn Bama Bash beginning Friday, Sept. 7. The Herd will open with hosts Alabama at 11 a.m., before returning for a 6 p.m. match against Northern Illinois. Saturday, the Herd will take on Georgia Tech.
"We go to Alabama's tournament and they have two undefeated teams there," Jacobs said. "It's going to be tough, obviously. Georgia Tech is 8-0 and Alabama is 6-0. Northern Illinois is struggling a little bit, but their coach is something special. He's going to have that thing turned around and you just hope it doesn't start with you. We're looking to go down there, try and pull off an upset and hang that first loss on somebody."
