Freshman earned first dual match win of season against (RV) Kentucky

IRVING, Texas – Marshall freshman Victoria Walter was named Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday, the league office announced.

Walter, in her first collegiate dual match, defeated Lesedi Jacobs of (RV) Kentucky in a super tiebreak, rallying after dropping the second set of the match to defeat the Wildcats' junior at the No. 3 position, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Walter was the lone winner for the Herd in its match against (RV) Kentucky and leads Marshall with 10 singles wins (fall and spring). Her win last week tied Rachael Morales' 2013 mark for quickest to 10 wins by a freshman during current head coach John Mercer's tenure.

Walter's C-USA Player of the Week award is the first conference honor of her career and also marks the second straight season Marshall has had a C-USA Player of the Week recipient. Stephanie Smith earned the honor in April 2018 after posting a 2-0 week.

Marshall hits the court Saturday for a home-opening doubleheader against Wright State and West Virginia State. First serve against the Raiders is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the Thundering Herd's in-state matchup against the Yellow Jackets set to begin approximately one hour following the conclusion of the first match.
