Men’s Basketball Falls at Southern Mississippi

Elmore becomes program leader in assists and made three-pointers.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Marshall men's basketball (12-9, 5-3 C-USA) suffers largest, defeat of season, 101-51, at Southern Mississippi (12-9, 4-5 C-USA) Saturday evening at the Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg.
 
Jon Elmore, C.J. Burks and Darius George each scored 11 points in the contest. Taevion Kinsey grabbed a team-high four rebounds, while Elmore had two assists and a block to lead the Herd in each category. Jannson Williams led Marshall in steals with two.
 
Elmore reached 702 assists in his career to become the all-time leader in program history just over three minutes into the game on a Jannson Williams three-pointer. However, the Golden Eagles started the first nine minutes of the contest on a 31-6 run, which was their largest lead of the half, at the 11:36 mark.
 
The Herd proceeded to outscore Southern Miss 25-17 and entered the intermission trailing 48-31.
 
Marshall made five three-pointers in the first stanza, including one by Elmore to pass Austin Loop for the most made threes in a program history with the 294th make of his career.
 
The Herd shot 30 percent as the Golden Eagles went 61.3 percent from floor during the opening half of play.
 
After trading three-pointers to start the half, Southern Miss went on a 28-5 run across the next six minutes and outscored the Herd 53-20 in the second-half as Marshall dropped the contest.
 
The Golden Eagles shot 64.6 percent for the game as Marshall shot 25.0 percent in the contest.
 
NOTES:
- Austin Loop previously had the mark for the most three-pointers made in program history with 293 and set the record in 2017.
- Greg White had 701 career assists and held the program record since 1981.
- The 25-percent shooting percentage was the lowest of the season for the Herd.
- 20 second-half points are the fewest in any half this season by the Herd.
- George's double-figure night was his first since Nov. 19 in a home win over NC A&T.
- Marshall made 14 of its 19 free-throw attempts.
