EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Marshall's men and women's cross country team competed in the Evansville Invitational with the men winning the overall team competition and the women placing second.

The men placed five runners in the top nine, individually, with Alex Minor leading the way in second (25:21.2). Evan White (3rd, 25:27.6), Daniel Green (4th, 25:43.6), Jacob Birurakis (8th, 26:03.0) and Joel Krznaric (9th, 26:04.9) rounded out the Thundering Herd's scorers. Paul Sepulveda (18th, 26:30.3) and Coy Smith (21st, 26:46.8) also competed on the 8 kilometer course for Marshall. The Herd's team total of 26 points was 42 better than second-place Morehead State.

The Marshall women (67 points) finished behind Morehead (36) on the women's side. Individually, Sydney Smith led the Herd with a fourth overall finish (18:57.3). Also scoring was Julia Muller (9th, 19:11.9), Abby Herring (11th, 19:15.4), Alexandra Evans (15th, 19:36.0) and Audreana Lewis (28th, 20:54.7). Chloe Adkins (32nd, 21:07.8) and Stephanie Rogner (43rd, 23:01.5) also ran the 5K course for MU.

The teams will compete in two weeks at the Conference USA Championship, which will be held at WKU.

Marshall assistant coach Caleb Bowen
"Today was a lot of fun for both groups. On the men's side we had a few goals going in. We wanted to win first and foremost. We wanted to load up the top 10, and we wanted to close the gap between our 1-3 and our 4-5 guys. We accomplished all of those goals today. We won with a low score of 26 points, we had five in the top 10, and had a 1-5 split of 43 seconds which is the best we've had. It's great to see all of the guys roll together.

The ladies did awesome as well. We were without a few key members of our squad and still finished second. I'm really proud of all the ladies today and how they competed. We had our top four in the top 20 in the field.

Now, it's time to focus on the Conference USA Championship. We have one more big workout coming this Tuesday and then everything else will be fine-tuning to be able to bring our best for the conference championship. I don't think I've ever been this excited for the league championship as I am right now. It's going to be fun!
