Volleyball Welcomes North Texas to the Cam for Conference USA Match

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team is back in the Cam Henderson Center on Sunday for a 12 p.m., Conference USA match against the North Texas Mean Green.
 
The Thundering Herd is 12-7 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA. The Mean Green comes in at 11-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Marshall is coming off a three-set loss to No. 19 Rice on Friday. The Herd is on a three-match losing streak, the first for the team this season. In the loss to the Owls, Marshall tallied 13 more blocks and junior Destiny Leon had her hands in 11 with four solo blocks and assisting on seven more.
 
The Herd entered the weekend 11th in the country in blocks per set at 2.85. After the match against Rice, Marshall's average increased to 2.91 and Leon now leads the conference with 96 total and 1.43 per set. Dostal is second in C-USA in blocks with 87 total and 1.38 per set. Both Leon and Dostal entered the weekend ranked in the top 30 in the NCAA in blocks per set.
 
On offense redshirt junior Ciara Debell has 271 kills this season with an average of just under four per set (3.99). Sophomore Sarah Schank is second with 145 and Leon has 111. Sophomore Mion Weldon is closing in on 100 as she currently has 95. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter leads the team with 402 assists and junior Sydney Lostumo is second with 278.
 
Senior libero Amber Weber tallied another 20-dig night against Rice and has 320 for the season. Weber is averaging 4.71 digs per set. Debell is next with 170, an average of 2.50 per set.
 
Opponent
The North Texas Mean Green are coming in on a four-match winning streak with the last three all by sweeps. The most recent win, on the road at Charlotte Friday night.
 
North Texas features four players with over 100 kills this season. Valerie Valerian leads the team with 274, and is averaging 4.15 per set. Barbara Teakell is next with 166 followed by Rhett Robinson with 139 and Sarah Haeussler has 104. Kaleigh Skopal has been the main setter and has recorded 731 assists.
 
On defense North Texas is averaging 2.06 blocks per set with 136 total. Alysha Johnson leads the team with 56 and Haeussler is next with 52. Teakell is the leader in digs with 228, however Aleeyah Galdeira is right behind with 217.
 
Up Next
The Herd goes back on the road, down to Texas for two Conference USA matches. Marshall plays at UTEP on Friday, Oct. 25, and then at UTSA on Sunday, Oct. 27.
