Weber tallies 29 digs
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team dropped a four-set match (19-25, 21-25, 25-15, 19-25) to the North Texas Mean Green, Sunday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center. Senior libero Amber Weber recorded 29 digs in the loss.
The Thundering Herd drops to 12-8 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA. The Mean Green improves to 12-7 and 6-1 in conference action.
Weber had over 20 digs for the third-consecutive match and for the fifth time in the last six. She was one away from tying her season-high of 30 that she achieved at Morehead State and at Charlotte. The senior leader made several diving saves off North Texas attacks that kept the rally going for the Herd. Weber now has 349 digs this season, an average of 4.85 per set, and 1,249 in her collegiate career.
The contest was a dig fest as Marshall recorded 86 total digs and North Texas had 88. Along with Weber, four more players for the Herd finished with double-digit digs with sophomores Joelle Coulter (15), Gabrielle Coulter (12), Sarah Schank (11) and redshirt junior Ciara Debell (10).
On offense, Debell led the Herd with 15 kills. Junior Destiny Leon was second with nine. G. Coulter led in assists with 24 while junior Sydney Lostumo added 12. Marshall had nine total team blocks as sophomore Isa Dostal had five total and Leon had four. Sophomore Mion Weldon assisted on three blocks.
The first set featured nine ties and four lead changes. The last tie came at 14-14 and then the Mean Green took the lead and held it for the rest of the set. Marshall battled but just could not close the gap. Weber had eight digs in the first period.
In the beginning of the second set, it looked like things were going to go easily for North Texas building out a five-point lead at 11-6. The Herd gradually fought its way back into the set and a kill by Schank tied the set at 18-18. The teams went back-and-forth but in the end the Mean Green pulled out the last few points for the win and took a 2-0 lead.
Marshall showed that it still had a great deal of fight in the squad, coming out on fire in the third set. North Texas scored the first point, and that was the only lead of the third for the Mean Green. The Herd rolled off a 5-0 run to take the lead 5-1. Throughout the set, Marshall had two 3-0 runs while keeping the visitors down in the set. The Herd scored the last four points with kills from J. Coulter and a block from Leon to force a fourth set. The Marshall defense played well with 27 digs, three blocks and held North Texas to a hitting percentage of -.021. Weber had 10 digs and G. Coulter had eight.
The Mean Green came out firing in the fourth set, but again Marshall fought its way back. After trailing 6-2, the Herd took the lead at 8-7. The teams continued to trade rallies with both defenses playing well, digging out attack after attack. North Texas eventually regained the lead and held on for the win.
Marshall heads back out on the road for two Conference USA matches first at UTEP on Friday, Oct. 25, and then at UTSA on Sunday, Oct. 27.
