EL PASO, Texas – The Marshall volleyball team fell in three sets (19-25, 20-25, 23-25) at UTEP, Friday night in Memorial Gym.

The Thundering Herd is now 12-9 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA. The Miners improve to 10-11 and 3-5 in conference.

The teams had to deal with two delays in the match. First a major leak in the gym onto the floor caused the court to be moved around to avoid the water, and the match began about 40 minutes late. Then in the third set, there was a 15-minute delay as the lights went out in Memorial Gym.

Redshirt junior Ciara Debell led all players with 19 kills in the match including 12 in the third set as Marshall attempted to avoid the sweep. Junior Destiny Leon and sophomore Joelle Coulter were next with five kills each. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter finished with 20 assists and junior Sydney Lostumo had 11. Senior Amber Weber tallied 15 digs and sophomore Isa Dostal led with five total blocks, giving her 97 total for the year.

The first set was a game of runs. Marshall had a 5-0 run early to take a 10-5 lead. The Miners then went on a 10-0 run to take a five-point lead at 17-12. The Herd rallied back with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 18-18. UTEP finished off the set with a 7-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set featured eight ties and four lead changes, but in the end the Miners held out for the win to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set was a battle as Marshall fought to stay in the match. There were 15 ties and seven lead changes as the two teams went back-and-forth. The score was tied at 4-4 when the lights went out and the match was delayed 15 minutes for the lights to fully come back on in Memorial Gym. Debell put the team on her shoulders with her 12 kills. Debell's 12th of the set gave Marshall the lead at 23-22. However, the Miners scored the final three points.

Marshall stays out west with a match at UTSA, Sunday afternoon. First serve is set for 12 p.m. central, 1 p.m. eastern.
